Festival Revela-T, Parte 3 bis

He querido dejar un post aparte para el trabajo de Joaquin Paredes ya que esperaba una cosa y me he encontrado con otra muy distinta, que, porque negarlo, ha superado mi expectativa.

Tuve del mismo modo la suerte de conversar con él personalmente. De escuchar sus explicaciones sobre el trabajo realizado (Que dicho sea de paso, aunque no considero necesaria tanta "exposición" por parte de un autor hacia su público o las explicaciones de un artista sobre su propia obra, el público lo agradece) y encontrarme a una persona absolutamente sencilla, cercana y natural, Y un trabajo con una muy buena base conceptual.

Festival Revela-T, parte 3

Salas de exposiciones.

La suerte de contar con una vieja y gran fábrica a disposición y muchos colaboradores desinteresados y llenos de ilusión es que la puedes llenar de buen contenido y mejores exposiciones.

En la siguiente sala se podían ver autores como Luis Estropiñan con sus pequeñas filigranas conceptuales, Cianotipos sobre el reverso de cajas de carton desmontadas, en su mayoría de medicamentos. Unas preciosas fotos de Iwona Aleksandrowicz (Poland), quien aborda sin ambages ni adornos, a través del retrato, la belleza pura y la estética del cuerpo y la cara de la mujer con fantásticos desnudos.

Otro trabajo que llamó mi atención fueron las pequeñas obras de Urizen Freaza (Berlin). Unos dípticos donde explora la representación bidimensional de la persona a través de la yuxtaposición de dos o mas capas, Técnica lifts de polaroid color, sobre polaroids monocromáticas.

No podría citar a todos los autores presentes pero tampoco podia dejar de lado el trabajo de Joaquin Paredes a quien sigo con curiosidad desde que decidio dejarlo todo a un lado y montarse una camara de madera gigante para Collodion Húmedo.

Al principio me pareció una especia de Quijote contra molinos invisibles, con lo que senti una gran afinidad hacia el, pero con el paso del tiempo he ido viendo que ademas tiene una particular y personal vision de las cosas, de la fotografia.

En su exposición en Collodion "Hemicránea", Joaquin explora y aborda a través de sus fotografías el mundo de las enfermedades crónicas, en particular el mundo de la migraña crónica. Ademas de las fotografías, el tratamiento del concepto es mas que destacable...

Al menos para mi. La sencillez y sutilidad de un maestro, la fragilidad y fuerza, el equilibrio y la observación elevada a fotografía. Momentos preciosos capturados en blanco y negro...

Festival Revela-T, parte 1

El otro día tuve la inmensa suerte de acudir al festival Revela´T !!

Hubiese querido hacerlo antes, acercarme el año anterior, pero me fue físicamente imposible.

Por fin un soplo de aire fresco tras tanto pixel, ordenador ("Computadora" si eres del otro lado del charco), tanto teléfono móvil, resolución o formato de archivo, gigas de memoria, tanto Raw y tanto material inmaterial... De repente me sentí inmerso en un viaje en el tiempo. El MacFly de la fotografía...! Desplazado a otra dimension. Rodeado de personas que, (en su gran parte gente de cierta edad) en algún momento de su vida se dieron cuenta de que el tren de la historia las dejaba en el anden y que sentían como les arrebataban algo muy especial. Muchos sentían que perdían el paso de los tiempos y que su mundo, como un castillo de naipes, se desmoronaba antes sus atónitos ojos. Moría igualmente con la desaparición de Kodak, de Polaroid y de tantas otros mitos, una parte de si mismos. Vieron ante sus ojos como desaparecía la fotografía analógica y el digital se imponía con rapidez y sin remilgos. Como la fotografía en cierto modo dejaba de ser un arte o una profesión especial, para convertirse en algo popular en el sentido mas banal de la palabra. Como pasaba a manos de desaprensivos consumidores con tics en los dedos, desaforados del teléfono móvil, disparadores impulsivos. Si una no sale bien disparo 100, que algo saldrá! Crecían como setas los coleccionistas de imágenes sin sentido. Disparadores crónicos. Desesperados del consumo. Paradójicamente la fotografía estaba mas viva que nunca y sin embargo moría día a día en su dignidad, en su pureza, en sus raíces...

Es por todo ello que reivindicar lo que fue, lo que pasó, el proceso de la fotografía desde sus orígenes hasta lo que tenemos (O no tenemos) hoy, es importante. Trasmitir el conocimiento y volver a las raíces, a la calma, al momento de pausa y reflexión que supone crear una imagen, O incluso la magia y el entendimiento de crear una imagen de la nada, se convierte casi en una obligación.

Tras mi paso por el joven festival Revela-T, en Vilassar de Dalt, y que se denomina a si mismo como "El primer festival del mundo dedicado a la Fotografía analógica", puedo decir que, a pesar de su corta andadura ha sentado algo mas que un simple precedente. No es el delirio de cuatro locos apasionados por lo viejo o lo antiguo. La Fotografía esta mas viva que nunca y aquellos que crecimos entre líquidos, químicos y olores al amparo de una lucecita roja, tenemos motivos para estar contentos y volver a creer en la fotografía con todas sus letras...

Control of PH water in Silver bath

Controlling the PH water in the Silver bath is necessary...

I have found that one of the best products to control the PH water are the specific ones.

Maybe you can found some products for gardens, pools, etc. that can measure a lot of different parameters, but I personally think it is better to buy a product that measures specifically the PH.

I have found this one (JBL, PH control form 3-10) in a pet shop. It is very easy to use and the results are very accurate. Yo take a sample , 5 ml, of your silver bath, mix it with a reactive, and wait...You have a reference color palette in the box and when the sample matches the color you are done. They also have other brands to control PH for the fishes water (Aquariums) but as I said they measure too many things that I actually don´t need. This way you can also save some money!

In my case I had a result of 4.5 Ph

Taller con Prof. Francisco Gómez

A luxury and a pleasure to share Collodion experiences, moments and learnings with Profesor Francisco Gómez, from Taller Milans, in Barcelona.

I have learned a lot from him and not just about the technique itself but also that this is a long and lovely journey that needs to be walked with calm, patience and perseverance.

A lot of memories come to me getting into the Collodion world... Of my laboratory in the old times, the starts in black and white film, the chemistry, the smells and in some way I feel quite relaxed now. I feel in a peaceful state of mind thinking that I have found big part of myself again...

I love the process from A to B.

Flowers

The plants and the flowers have something special.
Some essence and magic that cannot be explained. I have used a green background in this picture and a long time exposure, 5 minutes more or less with an f/5.6. I am planing to work with this special flower all this week. The flower is a light cream color.

3 Tests

Here is another test I made today.

The same subject, the same light, the same distance, etc.

The first plate was a complete disaster. Contamination of the liquids, peeling problems, underexposed...I still have some problems with the peeling!!

Peeling problems

I love problems!!
They mean that you have to find a solution or that you are doing something wrong.
Collodion is very special and requires all your attention, care and love. So, what is going on? After Lundphotographics.com, (Quote) The usual suspect for collodion that peels or lifts from the plate is a plate that has been inadequately cleaned.
I´ll be talking very soon on how to clean adequately a plate in next posts!!

First, buy a Camera!!

Get a Camera. This is very tricky or personal thing!

We all want the best, the most exclusive, the biggest...But in Collodion we must be very practical at the beginning. I once received and advice (The best one that someone could give me and I feel grateful for it) from Andrey Donchev, a very good camera builder form Bulgaria!! He build real beauties!! I was really interested in one of his cameras en the mail I received changed my perception of Collodion. "Start from small, get a lot of practice first and once you feel ready, you can buy one big camera. From me or from anybody else..."

So I took note and started with a nice 4 x 5". And it is my advice too. If you are interested in this technique and lloking for a LF Camera, start with a small one! You will spend less money in the camera itself, in materials, etc. and you can always grow up...

I choose a wonderful Wista M450 Camera 4 x5" from 70´s. It´s a Swedish camera build in Japan and it came from United States. An international start. Here is my little beauty!!

A fresh start

I have been thinking a lot on how to start this project. On how it all started...

Maybe it was a need. The needing of re thinking myself, my life, my photography... Maybe it all came from a deception in some way. The sadness of looking how photography became so massive, so underestimate, so "vulgar" in some way. It all happened so fast, the digital photography, the evolution of the sensors, the firmware, the massive storage, the need of a computer, the "democratization" of photography, the cell phones, the dead of Kodak... Thousands of people taking pictures, storing junk, images that will become meaningless and forgotten.

I still remember my beginnings in photography...The laboratory, le liquids, the chemistry, the smell...

The magic in a simple word!! Maybe it is the need of the magic. Maybe I am a conservative photographer. Maybe I am just looking for myself...
